Determination of autoimmune hemolytic anemia or thrombocytopenia or both (Evans syndrome) in Saudi women with antiphospholipid antibody associated recurrent miscarriage

Abstract :

Recurrent miscarriage is defined as 3 or more consecutive miscarriages, its effects can be distressing and devastating. The condition affects 1% of all women. Sixty percent of recurrent spontaneous abortions are unexplained and 7% to 25% of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortions have Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) as the main risk factor. There are well documented associations between Antiphospholipid antibody and abnormalities of specific cellular components of the blood, such as thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia and or both (Evans Syndrome). To fulfill the objectives of this study a number of 100 Saudi women aged from (15-49 years old) with the history of the presence of three or more consecutive recurrent miscarriage at any gestational age of pregnancy without previous living babies as the case group. A number of 100 Saudi women with non-complicated pregnancy aged from (15-49 years old) with the presence of at least one or more successful pregnancy with no history of recurrent miscarriage or any abnormal pregnancy outcome such as intra-uterine fetal loss as the control group. Blood samples (10 ml) will be collect and separated into serum and plasma for immunological, hematological and biochemical analysis. Data including medical history, gynecologic, clinical history of thrombosis, bleeding and anthropometric information will be collected using a questionnaire. The parameters of thrombocytopenia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia and Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) both clinical and analytical (biochemical and hematological) among the subgroups of the study will analyzed. Then, results will be compared with other relevant studies so that conclusions and recommendation formulated.

Biography :

Osama A Shaikhomar has completed his PhD from Nottingham University, School of Medicine, UK and Postdoctoral studies from Umm Al-Qura University, Faculty of Medicine; KSA. He is an Associate Professor in Human Physiology, Department of Physiology. He is currently the Vice Dean for Academic Affair & Development and Chairman of Academic Accreditation Committee. He has published more than 16 papers in reputed journals and he has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of repute.
