Correlation between quality of life and post traumatic growth in patients of spinal cord injury

Abstract:

Background & Objectives: Post-traumatic growth is the result of some positive psychological changes which appear after occurrence of a horrible event and due to struggle of the individual against this stressing incidence. This research has been conducted with the aim to investigate the correlation between post-traumatic growth and quality of life people suffering from spinal cord injuries. Research Methodology: In this descriptive-correlative investigation, 95 members of the Association of Spinal Cord Injuries in Tehran were selected by simple random sampling method. Their quality of life and post-traumatic growth were studied in different aspects using France and Powers�?? Questionnaire of Quality of Life Index for Spinal Cord Injury and Standard Questionnaire of Posttraumatic Growth Scale. Analysis of the data was performed with the help of SPSS 16 software utilizing descriptive and analytic statistical tests. Results: According to the findings, most of the research units (42.1 percent) had a 2-12 year period spent since the incidence and 89.5 percent of them were suffering from paraplegia. In 48.4 percent of the people, the result of injury was car accident; in 15.8 percent of them, result of injury was falling from height; in 29.5 percent of them, the result of injury was imposed wars; and in 6.3 percent of them, the results of injury were congenital diseases and disorders. The average score for total quality of life was 61/11±39/77; the average score for life satisfaction was 23/17±26/78; and the average score for life importance was 36/11±6/88. Moreover, the average score for post-traumatic growth was 17/82±81/70. Pierson Correlation Test showed a direct and meaningful relationship between the scores quality of life and posttraumatic growth in patients suffering from spinal cord injuries, with values of �??p 0/000 and �??r 0/628. Conclusion: In this research, it is shown a meaningful and direct relationship between posttraumatic growth and quality life of people suffering from spinal cord injuries. Also, the influences of traumatic events such as spinal cord injuries show that countervailing efforts of these people can cause interpretation of the disorder with positive impacts, and that high level of spiritual changes in patients increases posttraumatic growth and improves quality of life people suffering from spinal cord injuries.
