Abstract :

The international nursing shortage is a major cause for concern to the healthcare community and consumers alike. This issue impacts patient care and is expected to increase in magnitude in the foreseeable future. While the novel Coronavirus has dramatically highlighted this fact worldwide, other variables such as the aging workforce and increasing patient complexity seem to play a continuous influence as well. Literature has demonstrated that nursing burnout, and subsequent turnover, is one of the single most modifiable factors plaguing the shortage of nurses worldwide. While efforts such as wellness programs and resilience training do have a positive effect on this issue, enhancing nursesā?? security and retention requires deliberate actions by stakeholders through addressing unsatisfactory nurse staffing, insufficient regulation over workload, and unsafe work environments. This presentation highlights and summarizes initiatives and methods to foster safe and supportive work environments for nurses that can have a positive impact on workplace culture and promote patient safety at the same time. The value of implementing these findings can play a dramatic role in mitigating the international nursing shortage, and consequently improve the quality and cost of care to patients worldwide.
