Clinical manifestations of certain STDs such as syphilis facilitate the transmission of HIV. With syphilis, there is an increase in the shedding of HIV in coinfected individuals, because of the presence of a chancre which provides a mechanical break in the preceptive skin barrier, allowing access to the spread of HIV.
