Abstract

Different Roles of β-N-Acetylhexosaminidase in Metabolism

Veronika Hýsková and Helena Ryšlavá

β-N-acetylhexosaminidases (EC 3.2.1.52,) are ubiquitous enzymes, present in all organisms. These enzymes catalyze the hydrolysis of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) or N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) from non-reducing end of oligosaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, and other glycoconjugates. The functions of these enzymes greatly differ between individual organisms, cells and compartments.
