Counselling and management of smokers in a dental set up

Smoking is deleterious to overall health and shares a direct causal relationship with the oral health and periodontal diseases. It’s the one of the burning topics in the present scenario and responsible for approximately 8 million deaths annually around the globe. Over the past 25 years, there has been increasing awareness of the role of smoking on the prevalence and severity of periodontal diseases. Smoking is an independent risk factor for the initiation, extent and severity of periodontal diseases. Additionally, it can lower the chances of successful treatment. So, the health workers should identify smokers, counsel them gradually and improve their quality of life. The aim of the lecture is to educate the health specialists of different field about the deleterious effects of smoking on oral health and treatment outcomes in brief besides the counselling and management of such patients in dental clinical set up.
