Aims: To identify whether orthodontic patients have a baseline BPE recorded prior to starting active orthodontic treatment and assess oral hygiene status when called from the waiting list. Also, to determine whether any referrals are made for management of pre-existing periodontal disease
Setting: Liverpool Dental Hospital, Orthodontic department.
Gold Standard: 80% of pre-active treatment BPE score recording for all orthodontic patients
Materials and Methods: Data was collected retrospectively from randomly selected patient notes from different cohort groups. Data was compiled and assessed
Results: BPE recording:StRs: 1st cycle: 92% , 2nd cycle: 78%. Consultants: 1st cycle: 0%, 2nd cycle 32%
Oral hygiene status:About 1/3 of the patients attending StRs records taking appointment and new patient consultant clinics had an unsatisfactory oral hygiene status in both 1st and 2nd cycle.
Referrals: 1st cycle: StR: 1st cycle: 33%: 17 of those were to the GDP and 13 were in the dental hospital; 2nd cycle: 10%. Consultant: 1st cycle: 3%; 2nd cycle 9%
Conclusions: The consultants in both cycles and StRs in the 2nd cycle failed to achieve the audit standard. About 1/3 of the patients in both StRs and consultants’ groups had an unsatisfactory oral hygiene.
